THE DECLINE

After the Joe Frazier fight, Ali would take on Jean Pierre Coopman in February 1976 and would defeat him with a fifth-round KO, but some of the difficulties Ali would come to have later began to show themselves. He was still the Champ, however, time was beginning to take its toll. The first major signs of Ali's decline came when he fought Jimmy Young on April 30, 1976. Young was a talented fighter but was relatively inexperienced in general . . .

But the real indicicator that Muhammad Ali's career as a fighter was very much nearing its end was his third fight with Ken Norton in New York's Yankee Stadium, September 28, 1976. As in the previous two fights with Norton, the crab-like, 'peek-a-boo' style which Norton used gave Ali a lot of trouble. But now, Norton was in top form, more experienced and stronger than before, while Ali was on the decline due to . . .

Norton and his cornermen were shocked and angry because they thought Norton had won enough rounds to get the decision. But Ali was given a unanimous decision. Sadly, however, . . .
